What Actually Happens Before Sunrise

Trainers and exercise riders are typically on site well before dawn, working horses on the training track while the temperature is still cool and the footing is at its best. By the time most resort guests are ordering coffee at Blue Ridge Café, a full morning of training work is already wrapping up.

The Pace Is Slower Than You'd Think

Given how fast racing looks in the afternoon, the backstretch itself moves at a deliberate, almost quiet pace. Grooms walk horses in wide, unhurried loops. Everything is done with an eye toward keeping the animals calm, which means very little of the energy you'd associate with a race day.
