Shenandoah Valley Day Trips Worth the Drive
A short list of the towns and trails our concierge desk actually recommends within an hour of the resort.
Not every guest wants to spend a full stay at the rail or the gaming floor, and the surrounding valley gives you plenty to fill a free afternoon without a long drive. Here's what our concierge desk sends guests to most often.
Harpers Ferry (About 20 Minutes)
The closest and most obvious pick, and still worth it — the town sits at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers, with a compact historic district that's easy to cover in two or three hours. Go early if you want the lower town without a crowd.
Winchester, Virginia (About 35 Minutes)
A larger town with a walkable pedestrian downtown, several wineries just outside city limits, and a noticeably different pace than Charles Town's racing-focused energy. Good pick for a half-day if you want a change of scenery without a long drive.
Antietam National Battlefield (About 45 Minutes)
Just across the Maryland line, the battlefield is a straightforward drive and a good stop for guests with any interest in Civil War history. The self-guided driving tour takes roughly two hours if you stop at each marker.
September and October give you the best light for the battlefield drive — also happens to line up with our own preferred stretch of the racing calendar.
Shenandoah River State Park (About 40 Minutes)
The pick for guests who want to get outside rather than tour a downtown. Easy river-access trails, a few moderate hiking loops with valley overlooks, and a quieter alternative to the resort's own pool deck on a warm afternoon.
The Takeaway
None of these require canceling plans at the resort — most guests treat one of them as a single afternoon detour built around a morning at the pool or a race card the day before. Ask the front desk for current directions; a couple of these routes shift slightly depending on active road work along Route 340.
